Praise-Filled Petitions

Today's reading: Psalm 86:1-17

The loving and personal way David interacts with God always moves my heart. In this particular psalm, I was drawn to the way that David intertwines praising God with his request for help. Rather than filling his prayer with primarily "please help" or "please fix" requests, he spends a good portion of his song recognizing God for who He is—loving, great, merciful, and faithful. David is so focused on praising God that his entire request for help is framed in the context of highlighting God.

"Show me a sign of your favor, that those who hate me may see and be put to shame because you, LORD, have helped me and comforted me" (vs. 17).

What do your prayers typically look like? Do they include recognizing and praising God for His goodness, love, provision, sovereignty, and greatness? Why is this important? What does this psalm show us about being able to talk openly and passionately with God? Tami

Sad to say my prayers sounds like a list of fix this, do this and very little praise if any.
It is important for me to focus on Who God is loving, sovereign, great, good and faithful when I pray because it will give me faith and confidence to know that God will answer my request according to His will and I can always trust His answers to my prayers because He can and He has heard and answered my prayers in the past.

I know that when I pray openly and passionately to God I am putting my complete trust in Him knowing He knows best for me. It helps me grow in the Lord and wanting to talk to Him in fellowship and communion not only as a request line to Him.
