Final Defeat

| | Comments (2)

Today's reading: 1 Samuel 31:1-13

In this final chapter of 1 Samuel, Saul and his sons are killed in a battle with the Philistines. It's a sad ending for the first king of Israel. Saul's reign started well but then progressively deteriorated as a result of his choice to take his eyes off of God to focus on himself. Although the account of Saul's life is disheartening, his life story provides us with some valuable lessons in a number of areas--leadership, fear, disobedience, pride, and relationships--to name a few.

Take a few minutes to think back over the life example of Saul. What was the most important lesson God impressed on your heart from Saul's example, and why? Tami

Tami, I agree a very sad ending to Saul life as Israel's first king.

What an example of a life who chose to go his way and not follow the Lord. May I love the Lord with all of my heart and intentionally void sin and temptation because of my desire to please Him more!

Although Saul became an enemy of David, his death was not a victory. He disobeyed God, and thus became a tortured soul. I know people like him today. Although David became his enemy, David was grieved by his death. He did not regard Saul as his enemy--he had compassion for him and respected him. It is the way we as believers should regard others today, even those who can do us harm.
