Poisonous Emotion

Today's reading: 1 Samuel 18:1-16

David's life changes significantly after his slaying of Goliath. He is now in full-time service to Saul, and his success as a warrior is continuing. In fact, David's military accomplishments are so impressive that the people embrace David and publically praise him above Saul. "And the women sang to one another as they celebrated, 'Saul has struck down his thousands, and David his ten thousands'" (vs. 7). As you might imagine, Saul is extremely unhappy about being in David's shadow, and the next thing we see is a jealous king who wants to get rid of his competition.

What did you notice and learn about jealousy from Saul? David? The women? Tami

David showed loyalty and humbleness towards Saul.
I see no jealousy in him.

The Woman
I see no display of jealousy in these jubilant singers.
Just praise and rejoicing of victory to both King Saul and David.
Were they wrong to praise David, or so highly as one commentary that I read thinks so.

Saul

Instead of joining in the celebrations with singing, Saul instead choses to "sing" a sour note...jealousy. Comparing David as better?
Saul is very subtle at first showing is hatred towards David.
Jealousy robs us of our joy, thankfulness, helpfulness of others.

Tami, this lesson is "what I need" again!

Lord, I am so sorry that I have again compared myself with others even those whom I love, I consider "better than me"! Help me to obey and use the talent that You gave me to glorify You! May I rejoice with those who are using their talents for You, Lord and to encourage them and praise them.
