All to Build

Today's reading: 1 Corinthians 14:1-40

As we move into 1 Corinthians 14, Paul takes a good amount of time discussing the gifts of tongues and prophesying because the church in Corinth was struggling in this area. So we see Paul laying out how each functions as well as differences, benefits and drawbacks. But what stood out to me from this discussion was the core and underlying message of the importance of building up the Church, and how all gifts are to be used for that purpose. These words particularly caught my attention. In verse 12 Paul states "strive to excel in building up the church," and in verse 26 he says "Let all things be done for building up."

When you think about using your gifting, is it with the goal of building up the Church? How are you using your gifting to support and advance the Church Body? Tami

God certainly provides us with spiritual gifts so that we might use them for the edification of other believers. We aren't islands to ourselves; as the people of God, we're to exist in community, and do what we can to benefit that community.

I enjoy reading this blog and everyone's comments and would love to comment but I have a question, how do I know what my "gift" is? This is where I am stuck and don't know what to do to lift others up. I went to and have "discernment" 29 and "faith" 23 and don't know how these would apply. Is this appropriate to comment here? Thanks.

Michelle. Thanks for your post and question. You are likely already using these gifts in some manner because of the very nature of these gift areas. Discernment and faith are things you have and use automatically as you are processing decisions for yourself, your family, etc., (versus tasks that you can offer to do) and they certainly influence what you say and how you respond and act. If you haven’t already done so, I would suggest seeking out a member of the pastoral staff at your church about this. They should be able to help you understand your gifting and also suggest ways that you can use your unique gifting to build up the Body even more. Tami W.
