In a Good Way

James 4:4-10

Most the time when we read or hear someone talking about being jealous, it's not a positive thing. But as James reminds us to stay away from living like the world in James 4, he talks about God being jealous, and it's a positive thing. "Or do you suppose it is to no purpose that the Scripture says, 'He yearns jealously over the spirit that he has made to dwell in us'?"

So what does James 4:4-10 show you about God's love for you? What about God's desire for your devotion, attention, service? Tami

Read these verses using several different translations - all I can say is "WOW'!, this reading is packed with food for thought!!

As you mentioned, God's jealousy is good, as it's a jealous type of love (for us). Verse 4 is scary, "....Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God". It should cause us to love Him more. We certainly do not want to be God's enemy!

Ya know, for years I have read this passage and that verse you pointed out never really jumped out at me! How cool that today it did. I think the key is, "..over the spirit that he has made to dwell in us” - God made that spirit in me that makes me "me" and since He made me, to be a living soul, of course He wants to "own" me and know me. I know that the idea of jealousy is generally looked at as a negative thing, and even Oprah was impacted by a pastor sharing scripture about God's jealousy for us and she has said that it turned her away from God. I think this is sad because that pastor apparently didn't communicate that this type of jealousy (or longing) that God has for us is because of LOVE, not anger. I think generally, the idea of jealousy is connected to some form of control or abuse. God loves us and doesn't want us to love the world around us that is just another creation. He wants us to love HIM, the Creator. Something I plan on thinking about more today. Thanks, Tami!

I see God's love & desire for relationship with us emphasized in the things it's made clear that He'll do for us in this passage. If we'll draw near to Him, He'll draw near to us. If we'll humble ourselves, He'll lift us up. In other words, if we'll only give Him the opportunity, He'll pour His love and grace into our lives in unbelievable ways.

When God States that "He Is Jealous GOD", it all for the good. We must remember that God created all things. It does give him the right to be JEALOUS because of this. He explains, and tells us what he expects. This is a good Jealousy, if we just follow his word. And love him and give him his props! Because he is the CREAT
OR! and he gives all the instruction on how to live and good life. Only G
OD can be Jealous, and be respected and loved all in ONE! Because he is the I am of all I AM! I hope you can clean this up, I tried..........Val

I liked the verse' Draw near to God and He will draw near to you". How many times do we say where is God? or I don't feel close to God. I need to be seeking Him through His word and prayer before He will draw near. If we don't want God to be with us, just do what the world does best---just ignore Him.

Today's text really reminded me of how God's love for me is tied to His all sufficient grace. Though He is jealous when we exhibit behaviour governed by our human nature, this grace is available to change the particular habit. I love the fact that God is a forgiving God and that His Holy Spirit is available and able to guide us in what our actions, thoughts, speech etc. should be. My aim is to be devoted to pleasing Him and properly representing/showcasing Him in my actions, thoughts, speech etc. as I function on a daily basis.
