Luke 2:1-52

More often than not we read Luke 2 to get a picture of the Christmas story. So today, I thought it would be nice to look at Jesus as a young boy in verses 41-52.

So Joseph, Mary and Jesus go to Jerusalem for the Passover and when the festival is over they head home. . .but without Jesus because he stays behind to spend time in the Temple with the religious leaders. After a frantic three day search, Jesus' words to Joseph and Mary are: "But why did you need to search? Didn't you know that I must be in my Father's house?" (vs. 49). Hmm. . .some good food for thought.

So, what do Jesus' words reveal to us about the importance of knowing and understanding God and His law? What does Jesus' focus on God tell us about our need to do the same? How are you accomplishing that? Tami W.

Jesus asking his parents “why” implies they could have known something if they were connected with God. As Calvin states, “Our Lord blames his mother, though he does it in a gentle and indirect manner (p171)”. It seems a strange question in that His parents had completed every task given them by the angels and the law-yet they did not know their Son. They had fulfilled the law in every way but did not know that their Son was probably in the house of His Father. Juxtapose this with Simeon and Anna who patiently waited to see Jesus. Simeon and Anna had their part in identifying the Messiah and spreading the word. Mary and Joseph had their part in rearing the Messiah. And Jesus had his part in obeying the law (went back with His parents) yet getting people to think about how involved we get in “our part” at the exclusion of relationship with God.

Luke 2:52 says Jesus matured, growing up in body and spirit. Even at the age of 12, He was beyond His years and all were amazed and marvelled at Jesus’ understanding of the things of God.

And just like Jesus we need to be found tending to our Father's business in order to grow into Jesus likeness.

As we spend time studying God’s word and in prayer, going to church & attending Sunday school, we grow in God. We develop daily a relationship with him, just like we do with our Parents, sisters/brothers, or friends.

We cannot get to know family or friends if we don’t spend time with them and listening to them. It is the same with God. We need to spend time with Him to get to know Him – and by getting to know God we grow closer to Him, and grow as a Christian.

So, why not spend time with your best friend – Jesus!

Just for information (God never makes a mistake and His timing is always perfect) Simeon and Anna were at the temple because the Jews were very tied to the book of Genesis. Abraham when confronted by the angel of the lord argued that if there were 10 righteous people in Sodom that God wouldn't destroy Sodom, they took it to the next step if they kept 10 righteous people at the temple then God wouldn't destroy the temple.
Second when Jesus was 12 and went to the temple that would have been for his barmitzvah and he would have been questioned by the temple priests. This would also been his cousin John's.
By the way God knows everything and is very much involved in our world today. He's preparing us for His soon return.

What impacted me the most is verse 51, "And he went down with them and came to Nazareth and was submissive to them. And his mother treasured up all these things in her heart."

Jesus, the Son of God, was submissive to his earth parents.

If we are to correctly follow God, we must know and understand His Word.

Jesus knew this, and so He sought to learn and understand as much as He could, even communing and discussing God with those older than He.

We have opportunity to learn from each other, as well, as we seek to know and understand God more. Let's not neglect the gift we have of sharing what we've learned with each other as fellow believers as part of knowing God more.

Customarily Jesus' parents attended the Feast of the Passover every year. When Jesus was 12 years He too went with them. Boys were allowed from 12 years to begin prepare for their roll in the temple as the custom was.It amazes me that Jesus' parents traveled for a day without accounting for their child (v44).It took them one day to return to Jerusalem and another day to find Jesus; they found Him in the temple courts sitting among the teachers listening to them and asking them questions and amazed everyone with His understanding and answers.
I believe His parents were astonished when they saw their Son in the company He was with - the teachers. His mother accused Jesus of causing her and His father to be worriedly searching for Him. If they had checked before leaving Jerusalem would they need to return and search for Him?
Jesus' response seems to be saying that His mother knew that He had to be in His Father's house. Jesus was only reminding His mother of that fact.

i just think this is great of you to help people getting back in the bible honestly i was lost what to read next this is helpful thank you!
