God of My Life

Psalm 42:6-11

Even in the worst circumstances, God hasn't forgotten us. He hasn't abandoned us. Quite the contrary. Did you notice the words of verse 8? "By day the LORD commands his steadfast love, and at night his song is with me, a prayer to the God of my life." I love that verse and particularly how the psalmist recognizes the personal nature of his relationship with God when he says "God of my life." And really, you see that throughout Psalm 42 with the way the psalmist tells God exactly what's on his heart.

What does God being "the god of my life" mean for you? Are you approaching and talking with God like the psalmist? Tami W.

As I read it, the phrase "God of my life" refers to the psalmist's daily, moment-by-moment relationship with God, in which he views God as being in control of even troubling circumstances (v. 7b). The phrase also makes me think of our relationship with the Father is to encompass every aspect of our lives, not just the "spiritual compartment" we use on Sunday and during our devotional time.

My relationship with God does not resemble that of the psalmist. I often forget to "pray without ceasing," and end up going through huge chunks of the day without giving Him much thought at all. When I do get around to considering Him, it is usually in His role as Judge, and not as a Father who loves me.

First of all, I hope all enjoyed a Christ-filled Christmas and I wish you well for the New Year.

Reading these verses this morning I was immediately struck by the 'therefore'. The psalmist becomes very much like anyone else, one feels down and remembers God. It is so easy to not pray unceasingly when things are just ticking over. We need to remember our Lord and our God in all times - good, bad or anything in between. I know that it is much easier for me to remember to chat to the Lord when there are problems - I neeed to spend as much time with Him in the good times and be thankful.

Several years ago I was going through some major problems (the murder of a dear friend and then within 2 weeks of that I was diagnosed with cancer). I was amazed at how God had prepared me for these life changing events. He led me to witness to our church family by teaching them to find 5 things daily to praise God for and then to praise Him outloud twice a day. When you are looking for things to praise God for everyday-He is faithful to show them to you. It certainly helps me with my 'moment by moment' relationship with God. I do get busy and like Jeff go through chunks of the day without praise-but God is faithful and brings me back quickly!

Thanks K.S. I wish you well too. I to find it much easier to remember to pray to the Lord when there are problems but need to spend more time being thankful for the good times. All blessings, thanks & praise to the Lord my God for the good and bad!

My first thought as I read these verses was Jesus calling from the cross. Although we often reach points where we feel like God has forsaken us, He will also resurrect us. There is a purpose for the pain we feel; it brings us closer to Him.
Although mine is severly lacking, I also long for a prayerful relationship as deep as the Psalmist's.

Lord,
Thank you for the pain, and the peace You have shown me to go through it.

Because God is "the God of my life," I can go to Him with all the problems of life. I cast all my care upon Him because He loves me!

I could not compare myself to the psalmist for I do get wrapped up in life and think of my heavenly Father secondarily. I find that as I submit myself to Him and speak with Him first the worry decreases markedly but if I internalize my problems they seem to get deeper. I appreciate God giving a song in the night. I relate with this for as I have communed with Him, He fills my heart with songs of joy.

"He led me to witness to our church family by teaching them to find 5 things daily to praise God for and then to praise Him outloud twice a day. When you are looking for things to praise God for everyday-He is faithful to show them to you."

Trisha, this is great advice -- I've already started to apply it today. Thanks!

I would say that He is the God of my life since whenever I feel that I am far from Him or being faced with so much in life He has a way to comfort me when I cry to Him.

I may not be like the psamlmist but I thank God for being there when I need him.
