Compassion with Action

Matthew 9:35-37; 15:32-39; 20:29-34

We're looking at three passages in Matthew, and in each of them we get a slightly different picture of compassion through Jesus' actions and words. In Matthew 9:35-37 Jesus demonstrates compassion by teaching the crowds and healing the sick. In Matthew 15:32-39 he feeds 4,000+ people who have been following him and taking in his teaching. And in Matthew 20:29-34 Jesus' compassion leads Him to give sight to two blind men in Jericho. So Jesus shows compassion first and foremost by teaching; He also shows compassion by helping people when He sees they are in need. And He is responsive when specific requests and needs are brought to his attention (like with the two men in Jericho). Bottom line--compassion combined with action is a must for us as a Christ follower.

So how do we develop a compassionate heart and attitude? What are some ways you have (and do) show compassion to others? Who might you show compassion to even today--and how? Tami W.

I believe we develope a compassionate heart by staying connected to Christ and by knowing him through his word. I know I have been in many circumsatances that I would not have been compassionate, but only because of Christ, I was able to show compassion. I have an unbelieving husband, four children, and lots of friends some are believers and some are not, so I have plenty of oppurtunity to show compassion. For example, sharing the gospel message with my unbelieving friends and teaching them the way of Jesus Christ so they have the choice to not spend eternity in hell. I also help people in need regularly, like taking the trash for a woman in town who does not drive. I know for a fact I will show at least two out of my four children compassion today when it is 100 degrees and I will take them to the lake to swim even though they do not deserve to go. Isn't compassion a wonderful thing! Just think of how often the Lord shows compassion toward us every day. I am so thankful he is a God of love and so very patient with his children. It is so much easier to show compassion when you want to live your life following the master of compassion.

I agree with Nicky, "It is so much easier to show compassion when you want to live your life following the master of compassion". I am thankful for God's work in my life as if I did not have Him as an example I would be wretched. I am also learning there is a missionary element of Christianity that must be practiced as while I need to be filled and strengthened and mature spiritually, others need me! I am where some are not. And family is so much a training ground where you are pulled in every direction but I must minister to my husband and children, they expect it from this Woman of God. I too will continue to look for 'local missionary fields' - at home, in my community, at work, in church, everywhere I am placed.
All His blessings,

What strikes me about these passages is how aware Jesus was of the people around Him.
There are people in need all around us, too, but we have to make an effort to get our minds out of our own lives and take a look at what is going on with folks nearby. Even little things like getting an item down from a high shelf at the grocery store for someone who just isn't tall enough. Taking cold Cokes out the men who pick up the trash every week, especially in a heat wave like a good portion of the country is experiencing now.

these scripture enlighten us to the most important aspect of christianity and thats to show love towards everyone it highlights that its not just about me and my needs but its all about us extending our hands to people who need our hand.it teaches me that we sometimes have to do ordinary things in extraordinary ways
