Take Two

John 19:16-37

Yesterday we read Luke's perspective on the crucifixion (Luke 23:26-49). Today we're looking at the same account but through the eyes of John. And what I noticed is while these two writers are describing the same event, each highlight different things. Luke seems to focus more on Jesus and the dialogue and interaction between Him, the crowd and criminals. John, on the other hand, gives us more information and details of what happened, concerning both Jesus and what was taking place around Him. So reading these accounts back to back was helpful because they enhanced and added to the other.

So what additional things about the crucifixion did you learn from John? Any "aha" thoughts about the crucifixion itself, Jesus or what he went through for you? Tami W.

An "aha" moment for me...at the end of his life, Jesus was a man taking care of his mother (ie. family)
My wife of 7 years and I have been emotionally separated for a couple of years and it is draining. My prayer life lately has been asking Jesus to show me what else there is I can do to win her back, and the perseverance to never give up. After all that Jesus had been through and the excruciating circumstances, he is taken to our human limit of death - and takes care of his responsibilities. Wow I am so thankful for his sacrifice, it gives me hope.

AHA - Pilot, through the directing of God wrote "King of the Jews in Aramaic, Latin and Greek". Christ is King for everyone!

I just couldn't help but wonder where Joseph, Mary's man was at this time. And where was he that he didn't take care of Jesus' mother...

In my research of this event - I found Our Lord was six hours on that cross. Hollywood has never accurately discribed this event, although "The Passion" comes close. When you look at it in this context, it is hard to immagine what was done for us. I often ask myself why God would allow this. His love for us can not be fathomed. It brimgs tears to my eyes when I think of this event in it's reality. Our service to Him is reasonable and without a complaint.

My "aha!" this season is that Jesus CHOSE to go through with all the pain and suffering. He seems to have had a list to check off. When the last item on the list was done, He CHOSE to give up His spirit. He did it because He CHOSE to love us in an up close and personal way.

Regarding Joseph, I've been led to believe that he had already died by this time. In fact, we don't see or hear of him in other stories. I don't know what proof there is to substantiate this. Does anyone have some further info?

What stood out for me was how Jesus continued to show compassion and obedience this time towards Mary, His mother. While being nailed to the cross He still honored His mother. Verse 29 states, after this {appointing John care for His mother} Jesus knew that all His tasks were completed, from His crucifixation to providing for His family that His mission was done.

Jack - I pray our Lord will show a clear direction to take in your marriage. I pray for your heart and your wife's heart to hear His voice.
My 'Aha" moment was "Pilate answered,(H) "What I have written I have written."
