Special City

Psalm 87:1-7

One message came through loud and clear from Psalm 87--Jerusalem or Zion is special in the eyes of God. And what's special to God should be important to me as well.

So what can we learn about Jerusalem from Psalm 87? How can we use or draw on Psalm 87 when we get to other passages that talk about or take place in or around Jerusalem? Tami W.

Among my first thoughts was the hymn "The Holy City". Then next I searched for the lyrics of the hymn which then managed to end up leading me to "Revelation 21."

God founded the city just as he created us. He keeps track of who lives in his city and he knows those who have trusted Him as Savior and he resides within now. Praise God!

Zion/Heaven is more precious then earth and I am a citizen of it.Written by the hand of God is my name in it's register.

With all the attacks . there are many who need help in Jerusalem. Please Help.

in my foot notes for verse 4 it points out that he will keep record of all of those who acknowledge him as covenant lord and that he will take them and protect them as citizens of his royal city. Dose that mean the same for his believers too?

This passage makes me realize that just as God knew the name of all those born in Jerusalem, He also knows the names of all of us who have been born again to live in heaven.

Andrew,

Here are some thoughts on your question.

Psalm 87 carries on the thought that we see in Psalm 86:9 "All nations that you have made shall come and worship before you, O Lord, and they shall glorify your name" (NASB). Though Israel is God's covenant nation and has received promises from God that have not yet been fulfilled, in the coming Kingdom of God, redeemed people from all nations will enjoy the blessings of the Messiah's rule from Zion. In Psalm 87:4, the psalmist mentions just a few of those people. The "springs of joy(87:7)" from Zion will bless all of the saved of all ages. God is keeping a record of them all.
