His Pasture. His People.

Psalm 95:1-11

Our reading today, Psalm 95, is a call for us to praise the Lord in and with song. Now being a singer and musician, I love that idea. But I also love the ways the Psalmist lays out God's greatness and goodness for us. Verse 7 was my favorite. "For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand."

So what does being the people of His pasture and a sheep in His hand mean to and for you? How does knowing this influence your praise (with or without song) of the Lord today? Tami W.

Being a sheep is an incredible privilege. To know that God is my Shepherd and that He is watching out for me is such an amazing thought. We live in a world that presumes that God is watching out for everyone and when bad things happen it is God's fault. I suppose this attitude comes about because of God's great mercy and grace, even toward those who do not belong to Him. But not all, in fact, perhaps not even many, can call God their shepherd because they have not believed in and received Jesus Christ. I am so very, very thankful just to be a sheep, just to know that God counts me as His own and loves me as much as He loves anyone else in the universe. Though I am a wayward sheep at times, I know that His rod and His staff are always reaching out to me. Praise the Lord!!!

For me it means protection it means provision, I shall not want. I am comfortable and happy therfore I will continually sing his praises. Praise God who provides all things to his people. "The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want."

That is not even close to where my focus is in this psalm.
I think about the book of Joshua.
The Israelites had seen and participated in their redemption from slavery. They had seen their Egyptian enemies destroyed. They had visible proof every day that God was with them.
They knew that God had asked for a visible sign that they believed him. Still, before the battle of Jericho Joshua had to have them circumcised.
Even Moses sons had to be circumcised before this began.
So, like Abraham told the rich man even if someone were to rise from the dead no human being would believe.
That's what I think about.

First I must say that I have made Psalm 95 into a daily prayer of praise to my Heavenly Father. Your questions today Tami, bring to mind St. John Chapter 10 where Jesus tells us He is "the door of the sheep". In the beginning of the chapter, Jesus tells us that "he that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber".

So when Psalm 95 says, For He is our God; and we are the people of His pasture, and the sheep of His hand. Today if ye will hear His voice" this makes me feel very special that God loves me so much that we are so special to Him. In John 10 He is the good Shepherd who gives His life for the sheep (me) and further in the chapter He says, "I am the good Shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine". Jesus knows the sheep will stray but He himself will go look for that one sheep (me). To me that is just awesome. So what else can we do but give God thanks and praise and bless His holy name for their is no other God but one to whom all honour and glory go.
Thank You Lord for Your love, Your grace and Your mercy.

I too am so glad to be counted in God's family of sheep. My understanding is that sheep are not the brightest animals. However, God loves us so much. I was reading another devotional on the bus coming to work this morning, and I had a wonderful thought about God listening to us. I had a picture in my mind of an adult bending down to get on the level of the child and giving the child his full attention. This is what God does for us when we pray as his sheep.

I have been focusing for some time now on the sovereignty of God. This passage makes me think that God as my shepherd knows what I need and cares for me. If I go astray He will search for me and bring me back into his fold. I need to keep my eyes on Him and let him lead me. I need to be obedient and follow and trust Him

I am grateful for Jesus on this side of the cross. His mercy and Great compassion. Oh how I need Jesus. For that is what I'm thankful for in Psalms and give thanks to Him in joyful song for this Psalm.

OOps again I forgot to ID.
I'm the one who is thankful for Jesus on this side of the cross
