1 Kings 18:17-46
The showdown between Elijah and the prophets of Baal is one of my favorite accounts in the Bible. Every time I read it, I get fired up (no pun intended) about getting out there and "doing" for the Lord. Now the perception of the people here was that Elijah was an outcast and an underdog. But NOT SO!
So what is God asking or moving you to do? How can we get the confidence and boldness of Elijah as we go about whatever God has for us? Tami W.

This too is one of my favorite passages of the Old Testament. It is one in which I truly wish we had video. In my opinion Elijah was totally willing to trust God and to give God all of the credit. He took his life from his own hands and placed it into God's hands. His prayer is a total act of worship. There is nothing in that prayer about himself. It is all about God. I wonder if too many times in my own life it is more about me and less about God. Perhaps that is why I don't see too many of these "Mt. Carmel experiences" in my own life?
Faith can move mountains and Elijah had deep faith in God that no way would God let him down before all these false prophets and a god made with man's hand.
I believe in praying to God and I have so much faith in praying that I see His glory and His blessings in my life and the life of others. So it is always God to join with others and pray and God answers prayers if it accords to His will. I have seen so many miracles and I know that it is only God who by His grace has made these miracles happen.
There was this little 6 year old we pray for (individually) who was in the hospital with an illness that was baffling to the doctors. The child was just lying in intensive care with tubes not responding to anything or anyone. I personally did not give up praying, and while I was on holiday in Florida in July I tried calling to find out about him. I would get information from a friend as his aunt who I know did not want to talk about it and I just keep him in my prayers. That little boy came out of intensive care and finally out of the hospital and am told by his aunt this week that he is back home. Praise the Lord. I am still praying for Him. When I heard his name [info removed] initially I was very presumptious and mentioned to the Lord that with a name like that Lord, You have to heal him. I still pray for Him and thank God everyday for His love and mercy on him. All I did was to pray and God did the rest. To Him belong all the glory. So if we truly believe that "faith can move mountains" then we have to keep praying for each other. He hears us and He is always faithful!
I know you prefer us to use our own words in "comments" but my most trusted commentaries are found in Matthew Henry. Here is a bit of what he has to say about what Elijah experienced:
" A little cloud at length appeared, which soon overspread the heavens, and watered the earth. Great blessings often arise from small beginnings, showers of plenty from a cloud of span long. Let us never despise the day of small things, but hope and wait for great things from it. From what small beginnings have great matters arisen! It is thus in all the gracious proceedings of God with the soul. Scarcely to be perceived are the first workings of his Spirit in the heart, which grow up at last to the wonder of men, and applause of angels. Elijah hastened Ahab home, and attended him. God will strengthen his people for every service to which his commandments and providence call them. The awful displays of Divine justice and holiness dismay the sinner, extort confessions, and dispose to outward obedience while the impression lasts; but the view of these, with mercy, love, and truth in Christ Jesus, is needful to draw the soul to self-abasement, trust, and love. The Holy Spirit employs both in the conversion of sinners; when sinners are impressed with Divine truths, they should be exhorted to set about the duties to which the Saviour calls his disciples."
All of us have had times when we thought where is God....why is this happening to me...but the more we study His word and do our best to understand, we need not ask God WHY? but we become thankful for trials since now we understand God's working in us...at least that is how I believe. All the trials I have been through have only led to the most unbelievable outcomes in ways I never imagined. God knows what He is doing. All we need to do is first of all Obey Him and secondly Trust Him. God will take care of the rest.
This is one of my favourite stories too, Tami. It was refreshing to reread. Getting the confidence to do what God asks of me requires obedience, one step at a time. There have been times when I was too scared to follow God's leading - which I have repented of and have been forgiven for. I now realize that no matter what God asks me to do, He prepares the way (Psalms). All I have to do is follow.
We can grow our children up knowing God in our families. We have a very BIG GOD who is always by our side. We are so blessed with healthy food, homes to live and to rest in,families who love and care for us. God is with us all the time and wherever we go, whatever we do! God is totally trusworthy. We can worship, sing and Praise God and pray and give and God loves us.
The verse that stuck out for me was verse 21.
v. 21 " IF the Lord is God, follow Him, but if Baal, then follow him."
How many times have I decided that it's OK to watch a show that I know wouldn't please God. Or listen to music that I know wouldn't please God. How many times have I chosen to follow the easier, worldly way of life instead of God? So many time, even to this day!! And this from a follower of Christ for 23 years! From someone who knows from first hand experience that the Lord is God!
If the Lord is God (HE IS!) then follow Him, Jenny!!
What a reminder for me. What a challenge to whole heartedly, with no exceptions, follow him. Am I ever glad that the Lord does not give up on us sinners!
Thanks to the people who posted comments each day . . . some are interesting.
