John 1:1-16

John 1 tells us a lot about Jesus, particularly those first five verses. So I spent a few extra minutes today just going back and reading this chapter again, looking specifically for information about Jesus. I'm glad I took the extra time because it was definitely encouraging, particularly verse 5. It really spoke to me. "The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it."

So what did John 1 show you about Jesus today? Was there a particular verse or phrase that stood out to you? Tami W.

In reading the 1st 5 verses (John 1:1-5) I read it over again replacing the word "word" and "him" with the name Jesus. Now that was powerful scripture!

Tami

The entire sixteen verses stand out to me. Imagine how happy it is if you were to write a recommendation for your friend and could say so many good things about her. It really makes you happy and proud to know that you friend is such a good person. In a similar way I am happy to testify of the Lord's goodness and then I am most happy to say that Jesus is my Lord. I want to tell everybody about him and sing his praises constantly. Remember David: O God you are my God, earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you, my body longs for you, in a dry and weary land where ther is no water. (Psalm 63:1) So I am eager to speak of Jesus and have him walk with me and be my friend and saviour. He is the Lord and the light of my life.

The verse "In Him was life, and that life was the light of men." stood out to me because it reminds me of God's beautiful plan- we are a part of His creation. Through His Son, God created us and when we recognize, obey and love Him, His light shines on us. When we deny Him, we are shrouded in darkness. Jesus came to be the light of the world. Lord, I pray that today Your light will fill me and shine on others that don't believe; let them see You as I go out and about today.

"Jesus entering our dark world" was what came to mind after today's reading. Vs 4 really stood out to me; "In him was life; and the life was the light of men" His life is our light!

John 1:1-16 is powerful and says so much about Jesus. The first two verses tell us that Jesus was in the beginning with God. The next verses tell us that He is the Creator of all things and that He is the Light of the world. Jesus, Himself told us in John 8:12 "I am the light of the world; he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life".

Jesus came and the world knew Him not. He came down from His realm in glory and lived among the people as man, shed His blood and died on the cross at calvary because of His love-a love beyond our understanding. He shed His blood so that we may have salvation and that our sins can be forgiven. He was raised on the third day so that we too who love and believe in Him can have life everlasting. What more can we ask of Him? Lord Jesus, forgive us, we love and praise Your name forever.

I was struck by Verse 16: "And from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace." It is because he is full, that he can fill me. I needed that especially today.

John 1:8 stood out to me--BIGTIME! "He was not the Light Himself but came that he might bear witness regarding the Light."

That speaks volumes to me! It tells me that I can obtain the Life
that God intended for me to live, not when I die, but while I am yet alive! I believe it was David who said in Psalm 27 I would faint lest I see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. It also tells me that I too, can bear witness to the Light, if I present myself as a sacrifice unto God, as Jesus did. I believe that is what this is all about. He was our example he did not do it for us he showed us what we need to do to become a son or daughter of Almighty God as He is. I am truly grateful to Jesus for allowing God to use Him to help me along the way!

Jesus is my elder brother and he is definitely someone I look up to when I do not know which way to go. As we do our "physical" siblings.

I was struck by verse 12, specifically that "who believed in his name, he gave the RIGHT to become children of God". It (the word "right") bothered me. So I checked the King James Version, and in place of "right" it says "power". I love that, because eternity with Him is not something we are entitled to, it is a gift. Trusting Him with my life is something I need His power to accomplish.

Since He is from the beginning and was with the Father, we can know Him. Everything He tells us is truth. We can be His light to the lost. Forgive me Father when I am not that light. I need your strength and power to be like You. Please pray for my daughter in the midst of a grave decision [info removed].
All glory and praise to the Son of God Who is True and Just.

What struck me was that God has been since the beginning. We can't even hardly fathom that in our natural minds. Also, that he brings light and life to a dark and lifeless world.

"From the fullness of His grace we have all received one blessing after another. John 1:16 NIV. Today I needed to be reminded of that-I received some disturbing news from our son and at first, I began to zero in on the negative....but I've been working on 'taking captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ'...anyways, it was becoming more and more difficult as the day has worn on, and then I had a few minutes to myself and started my devotions...God's timing is ALWAYS perfect. As I read one of my favorite passages in scripture, it was as though lights and sirens were going off in my spirit! Yes, I could dwell on the negative of this news....or I could count the blessings I have because of God's grace and promises in my life. Praise God I am able to take control of those negative thoughts and bring them under the authority of Christ!!!!! And all because I am choosing to set my focus on the "WORD" instead of the world!!!!!

Thank you 'Powered by 4', Back to the Bible, Tami and to you fellow bloggers . I really was a wee bit skeptical as to whether this would work for me, but I look forward to the emails. Each day is a challenge to find those 'closet minutes'....but oh, the victory is sweet every time!!!!!!!

I've always loved these first verses of John. Jesus was with GOD and He was GOD. He created all things. Imaine that. Everything and everyone was created by HIM. Yet we all sin and because of it HE stepped down and came to this pit to save us. Amazing! One GOD!

Mary,

I'll pray for your daughter. Thanks for letting us know. Tami W.
