Stop that Drift

Hebrews 2:1-4

Some pretty serious business today in Hebrews 2:1-4. We're warned about the risk of drifting away from God. Now at first read, "drifting away" may not sound too bad. After all, it's just a little drifting--right? WRONG. The minute we start falling away from God and His Word, it's a problem. Our thinking, our attitudes, our desires change and before we know it, our sinful nature is running the show.

So how can we guard against drifting away from God and His Word? What are some things we can do to get back on course if we realize we're in the middle of a drift right now? Tami W.

P.S. We're starting a new series today on Back to the Bible called "Is the Bible Really Your Authority?" I encourage you to check it out.

In baseball, before a runner can advance he has to "tag up" with the base that he is on. We need to always "tag up" with God on a daily basis through scripture, prayer and meaningful fellowship before we advance in our lives.

If a baserunner leaves without tagging up, he is easily thrown out and hurts his cause. We risk the same fate as Christians if we try to advance without God.

When Satan sees a "slight drifting away" he is so happy because he finds us in a vulnerable situation and then he comes to entice us with worldly things especially if we are down and out, no job and in serious debt. It is imperative that we do not allow this to happen. We have to keep in God's Word which He inspired others to record for us so we can live by them if we choose to accept His salvation and live in hope for that great day when we shall be with Him eternally. The Word was written for us who have not seen Him.

We have to believe in of the teachings of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ while He was on earth and the testimonies of all those who knew Him personally and wrote all those letters to verify that Jesus is real and we must have faith and trust in what He says. We cannot allow Satan to fool us. When he knocks on our fragile door we call on our Heavenly Father and He will be there for us. He will not allow Satan to pluck us from His hand.

We must all seek support from our priest or pastor, the prayer or Bible study groups and pray. Give praise and thanks to God for His love and keep away from negative people and those who want to use us for their gain. Let us pray to Him to keep us away from temptation and deliver us from evil for the Kingdom and the Power belongs to Him and Him only.

God used this passage today from Billy Graham to draw me. Now i find it is the text for the emails I signed up for after "just deciding on my own" to go to BTTB for some help. What an amazing confirmation. I hadn't been listening to the show today, or any teachings for the past several weeks. Our Lord is real and involved and ready to call us in a Voice we'll recognize and respond to - we are His sheep.

It's hard to stay "true" to the Lord.... it's takes effort on our part! The tendency to drift is so easy, we need to always be on guard. There's an hymn that's states the attitude we need to resolve ourselves to if we want to stay true;

"Nothing between my soul and my Savior, Naught of this world’s delusive dream;
I have renounced all sinful pleasure; Jesus is mine, there’s nothing between"

This is serious stuff ... and we need to pay attention! I know I drift from time to time, and then get a reminder from God in some way that snaps me right back to reality - HIS reality. Drifting sounds so harmless and innocent, but as the saying goes "the road to (hell) is paved with good intentions." Drifting is Not harmless. At the same time, I think God's grace and forgiveness must be remembered too when we read today's reading ... we don't need to be fearful - alert and aware and true to God are what I think we need to be.

hmmmm, last week's teaching on prayer is certainly a great lead in to today's passage! Our relationship with the Lord is kept and strengthened by consistent bible reading and prayer(for ourselves and our 'heartattude' as well as for others). It sure is a slow progression from one compromise to another, but before you realize it, you've drifted from God and you wonder if you can 'go back'. The good news is YES!!!! God welcomes a broken and contrite heart (Ps 51) He is ever ready to receive us back, pick us up, remove the dirt and set us on His right path again.

It is so good to know that if we find we are drifting we still have a savior who we can go to and keep us on track. And HE keeps us from sin! How much better can it get.

For me, to guard against my 'drifting' I must first recognize that I am drifting and go before God and seek His forgiveness. Some signs of drifting include my neg. attitude and/or devoting time and energy to others things and NOT to God. When I re-prioritize my day by starting with Him, everything falls into place. There should be no excuse for not taking some time and spending it with our Father- He blessed us with 24 hrs. and the least I can do is thank Him for this day and open the Word to learn more about His love for me.

Since I work in the wellness/fitness business, I see how easy it is for people to get distracted and drift away from their health goals.
How much more important are our spiritual goals. If we take baby steps, or tag up as RBM (I like that)says we can be more successful. It's important to spend a few minutes every day doing something -reading the Bible and praying. It's also important to set a goal or goals. From a few minutes we can work up to 15 or 20 minutes. Small steps and work up to our long-term goal.

I've really found P4 to hepful. Thank you for the encouragement to stay engage in the Word and daily fellowship with our heavenly Father.

I must tell myself I don't want to go through the motions. Watch this youtube of Matthew West song Motions

My theory is to pack my life with so much of the things of God reading the bible,listening to sermons online & on the radio,READING POWERED BY 4 always helps,prayer time/personal time in prayer also praying with a great Christian friend is just the assistance I need also!I've taken notice whenever you got your nose in the bible,Satan never bothers me there!Because he knows thats his defeat!
