A dark day for David

2 Samuel 11:1-12:15

Reading about David and Bathsheba and all the fall out from David's actions always makes me sad. This story contains lots of sinful behavior--lust, adultery, murder, pride--and all this from the one man God refers to as being after His (God's) heart.

So why do you think God allowed us to see in detail the shortcomings of David? How about sharing one take away (cause I'm guessing there are many) from this story. Tami W.

not sure i know what you mean by share a '
'take away?'

Hi Tami,
It's good to be back, at least for the weekend. Long story short I've had some technical problems at work. Anyway, when I read the story of David and Bathsheba, I think about God's mercy and David's contrite heart. No one is perfect, but it is very important to have a teachable spirit and contrite heart before God.

I believe that God has allowed us to see in detail David's shortcomings because we too are human and err and we have shortcomings also. God chose David, the shepherd boy from whose lineage our Lord and Saviour Jesus came. God always chooses humble persons to show us that we too can come to know Him even though we are sinners. He came not to save the righteous but sinners to repentance, but first, we must tell Him our sins (He knows them anyway) but we must acknowledge that we have sinned ask for His forgiveness. Jesus loves us so much, that He shed HIs blood died for this reason so we can have life and if we trust Him and obey Him, we can have life eternally.

When Satan approaches we must remember our Lord and ask Him to help us over that obstacle. We must not be like David and stop to take a second look but move on and walk with Jesus on the straight and narrow path. Looking not right or left or behind but keeping our eyes on Jesus.

He allowed us to see this in detail cause this sinfull nature is in all of us. God loves us and will correct us, and will forgive us. He is a God of second chances and is truely our refuge. God has shown us time and time again that he will never stop loving us and that he will never abandon us either. We can always come back to him and ask him to forgive us. Their is no greater love than Gods!

Hi Meme,

By "take away" I'm referring to something you learned or something that you noticed as you read that you hadn't seen or recognized before. Basically I'm trying to prompt all of us to consider what we read and how it applies to our lives. Hope that's helpful and thanks for being part of P4! Tami W.

I believe that God wanted us to know that inspite of our down falls (sins) that he is a forgiving God and that if we repent that he will forgive us. Even though we must pay for our mistake. Bethsheba son died and David mourn and fast but the baby died anyway. There is a price to pay when we committ sin.( The wages of sin is death).

After the death of Davids son, David returns to God and is forgiven. It shows that if we are truly repentant, accept Gods forgiveness we can change and have a fresh start in our lives.

When we try to cover up or ide our sins , we only get deeper into sin like David did. His lust led to adultery that led to murder because his pride wouldt let him admit that he did something wrong. I think that we all deal with that , not wanting to admit that we were wrong because of our pride .

I have a slightly different take on this passage. I believe that our God, being the loving, fatherly God that He is, was saddened by David's sin. He quite simply decided David needed to grow in the area of personal loss, to learn what it felt like to lose what he had taken from someone else. God allowed David's child to die so that David would be humbled into knowing that only One can decide who dies and when. You must read further to see that God then blessed David with Solomon, a great king, as his next son. It was as if God told David, "well done, lesson learned." Remember, God allowed Bathsheba's husband to be killed, He gave David a choice, and David made a poor one. There was something there that God knew David needed to learn.
What an awesome God we have! Remember, what we give to God, He gives us back ten-fold.

I believe that God allows us to see the details of David's fall, so that he can also show us his redemption. The loss of the first baby explains that there indeed can be consequences of our sin, however the birth of the second one show us restoration of David's relationship with the Father.

We initially hear about David when God sends Samuel to find and anoint His chosen king "a man after His own heart" in 1 Samuel 16. We know that David is someone special. Sometimes we forget that Pastors , Deacons and even Kings, just like us, are human and able to make mistakes and sin.

When I read about David's shortcomings, I see that he is human. He sinned just like we do. If there was no sin, there would not have been a need for Our Savior, Jesus Christ. I think God allowed us to see all of David's mistakes, so that we would have an understanding of who God is.

God is forgiving and full of mercy. God could have wiped David out and moved on, but He didn't. Our Lord is longsuffering. He gives second, third, fourth (and so on) chances. David prayed and fasted as he asked for forgiveness and he went on to do great things. I too must pray from my heart, fast and ask for forgiveness of my sins.

Because David was a real person with the emotions and feelings such as we are. I believe one of the things God is reaching to us with is that even though you are born again doesn't mean you won't fall into "social" sin, and this sin was known to all who knew David. There are I know many born again christians who sin secretly and never gets found out, but it is no less sin, and to be judged by God. I'm aware that many "good" christians turns up their noses at those who have fallen, but God is still God and once we are His, we are always His. It upsets me when we take the last ounce of hope that one has in our Lord, and tells us God will punish us, etc. We are punished so much of the time by our own actions. I am encouraged because God loved David and never let him go!!! Think twice before you turn your nose up at someone you view as sinful, as that person may be holding on to the one ounce of hope he has, and that is in Jesus! And if you turn your nose up, know that "pride goes before a fall".David's life gives us an understanding of who our God is.
