Mary-Who would have thought? There's a lot going on in John 20:1-18 but every time I read this passage I find myself thinking about the participants in and the sequence of these critical events. I find it fascinating (and even a little perplexing) that Mary Magdalene was the first person to whom Jesus appeared and spoke to instead of one of the disciples. Plus, she delivered the message that Jesus was risen to the disciples.
So any thoughts about how or why God used Mary? Or maybe something completely different jumped out at you from this passage? Either way, tell us about it. It's always good to see how others are thinking and processing as they read the Bible. Who knows, maybe your comment will spark some additional conversation here at P4. Tami W.4 Comments

God using Mary as the first witness to the empty tomb is testament that the Gospel accounts were not "made-up." If they were, surely they would have chosen a man as the first witness. Women's eyewitness testimonies were considered worthless so much so that women were not allowed as legal witnesses in a court of law in the first century. The gospel writer recorded the facts simply as they happened.
I love Daniel's comments. I would just add that God knew exactly who should be the first one to carry the good news that Jesus was alive.
A couple of things stand out to me. First, when Mary doesn't initially recognize Jesus. How many times a day do we encounter Jesus and are not 'aware' enough to respond as Mary? This scripture and also on the road to Emmaus makes me ponder why Jesus chose not to appear in the same physical form as before his death. Second, when He told her not to 'cling' to him because he had not ascended yet. I also apply this to my life. He didn't want her to 'cling' to his earthly body. He wanted her to 'cling' to Him when he ascended to His Father. How often do I cling to earthly people or possesions instead of 'clinging' to my God?
I agree with what Daniel said also. In those days, a woman's testimony wouldn't hold up in a Jewish court of law. So the Lord made a great statement through appearing to Mary first. Good point Daniel!
