Our tongues are powerful weapons. As I read Psalm 64, I couldn't help but notice how the tongue (our speech) seemed to be a key focus. Verse 3 talks about tongues being like swords and how deadly words can be. And in verse 5, again we see talking about evil things. Then finally in verse 8, we see that God turns the tongues of the evil against themselves to bring them to ruin.
So after reading Psalm 64, how important is it that we watch our tongues? Any thoughts on how we should conduct ourselves when others are using their tongues against us? Tami W.

I look at Psalm 64 with great hope. The one thing I want to caution myself about is not to be the one who uses my tongue incorrectly. The great hope I have for those, and especially in the world condition today, who use their tongue against me, who would take away my religious freedom and call my speech hate speech when I correctly divide the word of God is this, God's arrows shoot true. It is He who will vindicate me, it is He who will protect me from the dread of the wicked. May I not fall into their snare, by using their tactics, but may my tongue glorify my God and my Redeemer.
Hi Tami...I had a thought and question. Normally I'm good at taming my tongue. Recently though I've been convicted about gossip. And it made me wonder what exactly is the Bible's definition of gossip.
I wouldn't dream of gossiping in any type of social situation but I've noticed that whenever we sit around and talk as a family we tend to discuss other family members lives, problems, etc. How much of that is healthy talk and discussion that prompts how we should or shouldn't be living our own lives and how much is just keeping others personal shortcomings in the news. It makes me wonder What Would Jesus Do?...and I'm not sure. Does anyone have any thoughts or Bible verses that would further reference this topic?
Thanks!
And keep up the great work.
Tami:
Verses 7 through 10 of Psalm 64 tell us those of evil tongues will be chastised. The Lord's protection will surround us and those who are faithful will be vindicated. There are two very old but encouraging hymns: "Like a River Glorious" and "Under His Wings" that I presented as solos today that remind us of how secure we are in the Lord. Indeed, singing is one way to use our tongues to praise Jesus (and keep out of trouble!)
We continue to pray for you and your mother.

Thanks, Bill, for praying for my mom and me. I'm just getting ready to go and see her. I'll let her know about you and your wife's prayers. Tami W.
