We're in Psalm 48 today.

What in the world is Zion??? Have you ever wondered What exactly are we referring to when we talk about Zion? If you have, you're not alone. Zion appears many places in the Bible, but it doesn't always refer to the same thing. Here are just a few examples: Zion hears and rejoices; Gates of Zion; Zion, the City of David; Mount Zion; Zion, my holy hill; daughter of Zion; and Great is the Lord in Zion.

So my question for you--what exactly is Zion? Look around some in your Bible and send me your thoughts. Then tomorrow, I'll post some information on Zion. Have fun digging!!! Tami W.

Hi Tami,

Reading about Zion Makes me think that, Zion is where People think God is residing. and He is the strenght of Zion.
A place where you would want to be.
The following verses of Psalm 48 stands out to me.
9Within your temple, O God,
we meditate on your unfailing love.
10Like your name, O God,
your praise reaches to the ends of the earth;
your right hand is filled with righteousness.
14For this God is our God for ever and ever;
he will be our guide even to the end.

I was surprised when I looked in Vines Expository Dictionary that "Zion" was not listed. In a KJV Bible, the heading above Psa. 48 was "Zion City of the King."
In Nave's Topical Bible there is a synonym "citadel." A stronghold of Jerusalem. Taken from the Jebusites by David, called thereafter "the city of David."
Collectively, the place, the forms and the assemblies of Israelitish worship.
Also the name of, applied to the city of the redeemed.
See Church; Jerusalem.

The Webster Dictionary: a hill. A Canaanite fortress in Jerusalem captured by David and called in the Bible "City of David." Later, the hill in Jerusalem on which the Temple was built: Zion has historically been regarded by Jews as a symbol of the center of Jewish national life. Also, heaven; the heavenly city and the theocracy of God.

Guess I conclude that Zion is representative of throne of God wherever it may be.

I think that Zion is somewhat like the True Church ;it is where the true worshiper dwell's and it is where the present of the Lord is found :for where one are two gether together agreeing on anything concerning God; he his in the mids to bless which speak to builting and protection which speak to victory.my conclusion was draw from these verses of the old and new king Jame version; which was is in the cycle of David live. (1 Chr11:1-8; 2 sam5:6-10 1 king8;1 )
Zion was refer to in a happy more are less; because of what it meant to God and of who reside there (psalm 132;13-14) HIS INHABITANT. Zion is alway remember by her people (psalm137) because of what happen there (Ps 87 :2,5,7) (ps 133:15,-17).so if you look closely at these verses,all that was found is what is in the present of the Lord God. BASE ON MY CONCLUSION.

Ok, as promised, here's some information on Zion. And, thanks to those of you who responded.

Zion sometimes refers to the mountain in Jerusalem where the Temple was built (Ps. 74:2). Other times Zion refers to Jerusalem which is also referred to as the City of David or the city of God (1 Kings 8:1, Ps. 48:12). Zion can also refer to the people of God or the nation of Israel (Ps. 51:18). In the New Testament, Zion is used by the apostles to refer to "the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem" (Heb.. 12:22). So it's where God dwells and where He will rule over His new creation.

For another look at Zion, check out the NLT Study Bible. There are some excellent explanations on page 947 located under Psalm 50.
